With a name that sounds French, lots of people think LANEIGE comes from Paris. Wrong: it really is a Korean brand, and it has made a name for itself as far as Europe and the United States. Its little pink jar of Lip Sleeping Mask has become a classic in makeup bags, well beyond Korea.

In this guide, we explain where the brand comes from, what its “Water Science” means, how to find your way between Water Bank, Cream Skin and Perfect Renew, and above all where to start depending on your skin.

Is LANEIGE a Korean or French brand? Its story

LANEIGE was launched in September 1994 in South Korea by the Korean group Amorepacific. The name comes from the French “la neige” (the snow): the image of clear, fresh skin full of water. It’s a nod, nothing more: the brand itself is 100% Korean.

Success came quickly in Korea. In 2002, LANEIGE set out to conquer markets abroad, with its first points of sale in Hong Kong and Shanghai. It then expanded across Asia.

The real international turning point was 2017: LANEIGE arrived at Sephora in the United States, with its Lip Sleeping Mask as the headliner. Two years later, in April 2019, it landed in Europe at Sephora, in 18 countries including France.

Since September 2024, its global ambassador has been Jin, from BTS, the first man to hold this role for the brand. As of mid-October 2026, Jin is still the face of LANEIGE: he fronts the campaign for its very first Bouncy & Firm hydrogel eye patches, on sale on the brand’s website since September 18, 2026 and at Sephora in the United States since October 6.

The LANEIGE philosophy: it all starts with water

Where other Korean brands bet on a plant or a signature ingredient, LANEIGE chose a very simple common thread: water. Its in-house technology is called Water Science. The idea: well-hydrated skin is softer, more radiant and more resilient. In practice, that means three things:

  • Hydration first: almost every line, even anti-aging or radiance ones, has a very hydrating base.
  • Overnight care: LANEIGE popularized the “sleeping mask”, a mask you leave on all night instead of (or on top of) your cream.
  • Pleasant textures: fresh gels, melting creams, milky toners… designed to be layered in a Korean routine.

LANEIGE’s key ingredients

Each LANEIGE line revolves around one main active ingredient. Here are the ones to know so you can choose without getting it wrong.

“Blue” hyaluronic acid

It’s the heart of the Water Bank line. LANEIGE presents it as a hyaluronic acid finer than the classic version, obtained by fermentation with a seaweed extract, for a light texture and long-lasting hydration. You’ll find it in the Water Bank Blue Hyaluronic Cream or the lighter Water Bank emulsion.

The hydrating trio in the sleeping masks

The Water Sleeping Mask combines three types of hyaluronic acid, squalane and a probiotic-derived complex that helps strengthen the skin barrier. The result: hydration that lasts all night, without a greasy feel.

Berries and vitamin C, for the lips

The Lip Sleeping Mask blends an antioxidant-rich berry complex, vitamin C, and nourishing butters (shea, murumuru, coconut oil). Apply a thick layer in the evening: when you wake up, your lips are smooth and supple.

Ceramides and peptides: the Cream Skin line

The Cream Skin Cerapeptide Refiner has an original idea: turning a cream into a toner. Its milky formula delivers ceramides (for the skin barrier) and peptides, right from the first step of your routine. It’s the product Jin presented for his first campaign with the brand.

Retinol and collagen peptides: Perfect Renew 3X

LANEIGE’s anti-aging line. The Perfect Renew 3X Cream Advanced combines encapsulated retinol, a collagen peptide complex and ceramides, for firmer, smoother skin over the weeks.

Vitamin C: the Radian-C line

For radiance and a more even complexion, the Radian-C line relies on vitamin C. The Radian-C Cream is the easiest way to start.

Centella and forest yeast: Cica

For sensitive skin, the Cica Sleeping Mask combines centella asiatica extracts with a forest yeast from Jeju Island, plus panthenol to soothe.

Pick your need: we give you our favorite product, plus two others to round it out.

Dehydrated, tight-feeling skin

Go all in on the Water Bank line: a toner to prep the skin, a serum to hydrate and a cream to lock in the water.

First signs of aging

The retinol and peptides of Perfect Renew 3X in the evening, and the Bouncy & Firm serum for bouncier skin.

Sensitive skin that flushes easily

Gentle, soothing formulas: a gel cleanser that doesn’t strip, a creamy toner and centella for the night.

Dull complexion, lacking radiance

The vitamin C of the Radian-C line, ideally in the morning, always followed by sunscreen.

Our tips for using LANEIGE well

  • The sleeping mask is the last step: it goes on after your cream, never before. The Water Sleeping Mask is rinsed off in the morning.
  • Two or three times a week is enough for the Water Sleeping Mask; you can go up to every night if your skin is very dry.
  • Apply the Lip Sleeping Mask in a thick layer in the evening, and in a thin layer in the morning before your lipstick.
  • Go easy with the retinol in Perfect Renew: start with 2 to 3 evenings a week, then increase if your skin tolerates it.
  • Sunscreen is a must as soon as you use retinol or vitamin C.
  • One new product at a time, tested first on a small area, so you know what really suits your skin.
Good to know

LANEIGE products are cosmetics: they help hydrate and soothe, but they don’t replace medical advice. If your skin reacts (lasting redness, itching, unusual breakouts) or if you have a skin problem that persists, ask a dermatologist for advice.

The tip from Seoul

Our trick: keep your jar of Lip Sleeping Mask on your bedside table, not in the bathroom: that way, you never forget to put it on right before you turn off the light.
